Karakia - Canal 33 - Irish People Chapter 1

“One hundred thousand welcomes-1”, “Céad míle fáilte-1”

After decades at the wrong end of the European Economic scale the Irish economy is now leader in the EU annual growth ratings. A young and innovative population who have now long forgotten the hard times and exodus which the country suffered for many years. Those who leave the island now go for very different reasons, perhaps as tourists, many of whom will be coming to Catalonia over the Saint Patrick’s festival weekend, Irish national holiday.

Barcelona is getting a little bit more and more Irish year by year with the opening of tens of Irish pubs where the dark beer and music reign supreme. Now we are just sort of getting to know their gastronomy a little bit better.

Ella, a céili dancer is going to show us how. She has founded a traditional dance and stepdance company. Stepdance is a type of tap dance which has gained it’s fame from it’s exciting and contagious rhythm. Ella will be our guide during the Saint Patricks festival in Barcelona, she will teach us to make a Beef Stew with stout (Irish Black Beer). During our journey we will meet up with different Irish groups such as Los Stompers, The Jolly Beggars and Nights Around the Table who have installed themselves in the city and are exponents of the typical Irish seisiúns in the pubs.

Brian and Séamus will show us how to make authentic bagún, roasted ham similar to Galician lacón and they will reveal a sweet use for rhubarb. But it’s not going to be just music and food. We will also learn a few words in Irish and get to know the Irish national GAA sports.

In this episode we get to know the background of the O’Callaghan family, one of the most important of the ancient clans who came to the region around the Ebre two centuries ago. Their Catalan roots live along side the desire to maintain a connection with their origins and an Irish culture which is ever more present in our country. Joan is the recognised head of the O’Callaghan Clan around the world. From their home in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Joan and his family show us how to prepare dishes like l’anraith almóinní agus biolair (Walnut and watercress Soup) and l’uaineoil faoi chrústa, roast lamb with mint sauce.

Far from the old style migratory exodus from necessity, the Irish, open minded and cosmopolitan, continue to migrate but now in search of new opportunities. Siobhán and Jack arrived in Sant Feliu de Guíxols a few years ago. Their integration into the local culture and language has even allowed them to export some of the local produce. With them we learn to do one of the Irish national dishes Irish stew.

This visit to our neighbours of Irish extraction begins with Saint Patrick’s Day Irelands national holiday and ends with Oíche Shamhna or Halloween, the Celtic festival to mark the end of the harvest.
